On Thursday, 31st May, colleagues in India celebrated as the 15,000th vehicle rolled off the line in Pune.
Pune Operations Low Volume Manufacturing Plant has been locally assembling JLR vehicles for over 7 years, starting with 656 Freelanders back in 2011/12.
The operation has launched 8 vehicles in its seven year history and currently assembles 6 models. Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar XE, XF, XJ and F Pace are assembled on 2 small lines in a contract manufacturing arrangement with Tata Motors, supported by a local JLR team.
3138 vehicles were assembled in 2017/18, the highest plant volune to date and a 32% increase over 2016/17. This is expected to rise to over 4000 vehicles this fiscal year.
Facts and Figures
The Pune vehicle plant covers approximately 10,000sqm (1.5 average football pitches). The assembly lines consist of predominantly manual processes over 20 and 14 stations for Line 1 and Line 2 respectively.
Painted body shells and parts are packed and shipped from 2 JLR UK packshops in Halewood and Minworth.
Also located on the Pune plant, is the recently launched engine assembly facility for JLR 2.0 petrol and diesel engines.
The India luxury market showed growth of 23% and JLR India reported sales growth of 83% across all vehicles versus the same period in 2016/17 - the highest increase in the luxury sector market.
