AutopleX project will give self-driving cars the vision to see around corners

Jaguar Land Rover is at the forefront of a project developing self-driving cars that can see around corners at blind junctions and through obstacles.

Leading a project called AutopleX the aim is to combine connected, automated and live mapping technology to provide autonomous driving cars with information earlier. The benefit will see systems communicate with all other road users and obstructions when there is no direct line of sight, which will allow the vehicle to merge lanes and negotiate complex junctions and roundabouts without driver input.

Chris Holmes, Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Research Manager said this research project is crucial in order to make automated driving cars a reality sooner, adding:

“Together with our AutopleX partners, we will merge our connected and autonomous research to empower our self-driving vehicles to operate safely in the most challenging, real-world traffic situations. This project will ensure we deliver the most sophisticated and capable automated driving technology.”

The company is currently in the midst of developing full and semi-autonomous vehicle technologies, while its involvement in the AutopleX project sees partners such as Highways England, INRIX, Ricardo, Siemens, Transport for West Midlands and WMG help test the technology through simulation and on public roads in the West Midlands.
