The Halewood paint team have taken on the charge challenge, looking at every step of the paint process to see where they can make savvy savings!
Neil Benson, Engineer, started in Halewood as an apprentice in 1985, he completed his degree in electronics engineering and has worked in the paint shop for the last 24 years. He was asked the ‘burning’ question, could the team save money on how they heat the ovens? Moving from heating the ovens 24 hours a day to having them reach the right temperature just as the first car arrives, saving money on heating the ovens when it isn’t necessary.
Neil rolled up his sleeves and started working on software programming, so that the oven could be just at the right temperature for the first car arriving. For those of you who like to get your bake on – it’s just like getting your cooker to the right temperature before you pop your delicious dish in to bake!
Neil worked on the programme so that it could adapt if there was a problem somewhere else on the line, to change the warming up time so the line wasn’t delayed any further when the car reaches paint. After many months of testing and with support from the maintenance team they were finally able to roll the new programming out making a massive cost saving of £124,000 per year!
Neil told us, “It’s an ongoing process, we’re constantly working on the programming so that we can get even better at predicting how hot the ovens need to be and when. We had everything we needed in house to make the changes, it was just about looking into every idea no matter how big or small and seeing where we can make savings”.
It sounds like Neil and the paint shop team are charging ahead with fantastic savings – well done team!
