Allyship: How to support your colleagues beyond Black History Month
Many of you may be wondering how you can support your black colleagues beyond this month so read on to find out more about allyship at work. Allyship is a term used to describe how you can use your individual position to amplify the voices of a minority group. You don't need to identify as part of a group, it's simply about being an advocate in promoting inclusive behaviours within your own team.
The responsibility of fostering an inclusive community starts with each of us as individuals. Positively challengingly the wrong behaviours raise’s the level of respect for each other and improves workplace culture.
The below could support you in becoming an ally at work, but also if you already identify as an ally but want to do more.
Take part in activities this Black History Month. The REACH Network are running a whole host of activities this month so support the network by joining a lunch and learn or go and take a look at the specially wrapped cars that have been designed for BHM, if they are coming to your site.
The Harvard Business Review has some useful tips below:
Listen and learn from your Black colleagues experiences.
Engage with your Black colleagues in racially diverse and more casual settings
Ask Black employees about their work and their goals
Provide your Black colleagues with opportunities, suggestions, encouragement and general support.
"Supporting race inclusion allies in the workplace was one of the key principles JLR committed to when signing the Race at Work charter. To support this, REACH work closely with Business in the community to access resources, information and toolkits to help create more opportunities for Black talent at JLR, which you can find out more about here."
