The Connected Car team has launched a new version of InControl Remote to the iOS App Store in the UK.
It has been a labour of love for the team over the last year. The app doesn’t just look dramatically different, it’s been re-written from the ground up eliminating many of the quality and latency issues reported in the previous version.
A new modular design and architecture ensures it is future-proof, with the re-use of these modules accelerating development of other apps in our portfolio, such as Remote Park Assist.
InControl Remote currently enables remote vehicle interaction to 1.6 million connected cars worldwide. Last year the app generated close to £20m in revenue and is predicted to make almost £122m over the next five years.
For our customers it’s a valued companion and we will continue to add new features in the coming months and years in alignment with their feedback.
On first appearance the app seems simple, but under the hood it interfaces with a range of vehicle model years for both brands, with different trim levels, different versions of cloud services and a whole spectrum of mobile devices, and operating systems for iOS and Android.
It has more than 200 features, each of which need to be maintained for five years for each customer post purchase. This really is a living product with complexity ever increasing with each new vehicle or app feature we add over time.
When we started the redesign we had few skills and expertise in-house, this has grown into a highly skilled multi-location team with step-by-step iterative development at the heart of their success.
A beta trials network made up of around 550 active monthly users from across Jaguar Land Rover were instrumental in elevating our quality metrics. Their feedback on the experience and the content was strongly positive and hugely helpful.
As the app is available to more users across our markets in the coming months, we’ll learn more and continue to improve upon the product itself and the processes we use to make it.
We are currently completing the Android app and also building the wider market roll out plan beyond the UK.
Until this is done the original Remote app will remain available until later this year in which we will be retiring it for good. We encourage you to try out the new app and to share your feedback and experiences with us.
Thanks to everyone who has been involved in either designing, developing, testing, operating, supporting or marketing the app. We are really proud of what we have achieved and excited to finally be sharing it with our customers.
If you are not already part of the Beta Trial and would like to access the app and features before they are released, please sign up here.
