Last week we announced we were on the look- out for some green fingered volunteers to help us plant 70 trees at Halewood, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which marks her 70 years on the throne.
The activity will take place during Week 5, commencing 31st January 2022, which is a non-production week. We caught up with Trim and Final Technology Manager, Ian Holohan, who has helped to bring the project to ‘fruition’, about why he thinks employees should take advantage of this blooming brilliant opportunity.
Asked who first planted the seed for the project, Ian said: “We were initially contacted by Knowsley Chamber of Commerce who were encouraging businesses in the borough to plant a tree to commemorate the Jubilee, so we decided to do 70, one to mark each year of the Queen’s reign.
Ian said: “This is a positive, sustainable initiative which has many benefits for our plant and our people. As well as uplifting the facilities with a spectacular orchard of fruit trees, it will give employees a sense of pride in coming to work and build a strong sense of community.”
There are many different ways that you can get involved in this project, whether it’s individually if gardening is something that interests you, or as a work group as part of a team bonding exercise.
Ian added: “We have over 3700 Halewood employees on site, so it gives those volunteering the opportunity to meet new people and encourage interaction amongst different work groups, which is fantastic.”
Asked what trees are being planted, Ian said: “It’s a real mixture; we have apples, pears, plums so as well as sprucing up the site, it will encourage wildlife to grow and it’s also well known that green spaces like these can help to enhance mood, reduce stress and improve mental well-being.”

The planting of the trees is expected to take place during normal shift times but some flexibility to work different hours may be required to complete this.
