Imagine an industry leading laser hardening process, which offers a safer, cleaner, more cost effective and higher quality solution, putting Jaguar Land Rover at the forefront of technology. A team from PTME have done just that…
Revolutionising the induction hardening process at the EMC was the aim for Anton Barrack, a manager in cylinder head machining when he first created a team to examine the current standard. Just a few months later he was presenting his idea at the Innovista finals.
The idea, says Anton, came about after witnessing the laser hardening application at a supplier. And so began a project working alongside the Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) team to develop a new process capable of transforming induction hardening across Jaguar Land Rover.
“Our current induction hardening process is the industry standards for OEMs. The creation of a new process has the opportunity to put us at the forefront of hardening technology as well become industry leading for hardening the integrated sprocket.
“For me the most exciting and rewarding part of the process was seeing the technology develop from concept stage through to full capability runs. We learnt so much, including its advantages and limitations. The potential benefits to the business are substantial, reducing electricity and tooling costs, capital costs; improved positional tolerance and reduced maintenance requirements.
“We’ve still got a long way to go, but the next steps are to further refine the process and engage with product design to move forward with design verification testing. Once we’ve developed a good understanding around the engine testing results, we can share our learning throughout the wider PTO network and business network.
Team member Matt Massey, added: “We chose to enter Innovista as it’s a great platform to demonstrate the innovation and drive for improvement in PTME.
“Seven teams from PTME went through a preliminary round, with four finalist chosen to present their projects to the judging panel at the finals.
“We thoroughly enjoyed Innovista. We felt a great sense of achievement showcasing our work and would like to thank everyone who helped us along the way.
“We learnt a lot and have certainly been inspired. It opened our eyes to the innovation that takes place in the business, inspiring us to continue to innovate.
