Sunday 31 March marks Mothering Sunday in the UK and we know we have some magnificent mums working here at our Halewood plant. However according to new mum, Kim Challis, who is a BIW Production Clerk, every day for her is like Mother’s Day. Here is her story…
Kim said “I never thought I would be in the position to have a baby, as I knew I didn’t want to carry a child myself, but meeting my wife Jen made my mum dream possible. I met Jen eight years ago when we were working together in ASDA and I said to my friends there and then I was going to marry her one day and that’s exactly what I did.
“Then last November we welcomed our first child, Reggie, into the world. Weighing in at 9lbs 14 oz, he was the perfect little bundle. Being in a same sex marriage meant our journey to becoming mums was always going to be a bit more of a challenge. It took us two years to get to this point, but looking into Reggie’s big blue eyes makes everything worth it.
“Jen brings out the best in me and celebrating our first Mother’s Day together is something we thought may never happen. We can’t believe Reggie is finally here so every day spent with him is like a celebration in itself.”
Asked how they will be spending Mother’s Day, Kim said: “We’ve decided to take Reggie on his first trip to the Lake District so he can see where his mummies got engaged. It will be a very special day for all three of us, so I’m really looking forward to it and have a few surprises up my sleeve for Jen.”
Asked what she has learnt since becoming a mum, Kim said: “I’ve given up on ever having a hot cup of tea again as you don’t stop. On a serious note, it has taught me what’s really important in life and I know Reggie is incredibly lucky to have two mummies who love him so much.
“My advice to other expectant mums would be to enjoy every single second of the journey- even the luke-warm cuppas, as there is nothing like it.”
We hope Kim and all our other Halewood mums have the perfect Mother’s Day they deserve.
