It was love at first sight for Dan Macefield, a team leader on Zone 12 in Mod 4, when he first glimpsed Kim Hill on her first day at the EMC. With a little help from Paul ‘Cupid’ Caine, the two became inseparable and have two very special celebrations coming up in the next few months, a wedding and a baby.
Dan said: “I was a stand in team leader in the diesel assembly hall and had gone to a meeting with all the other team leaders where they were being introduced to the new starters. I saw Kim, it was her first day and I was smitten. She’d say my persistence wore her down to eventually agreeing to going out with me.
“At the time she was working in the petrol assembly hall, although she’s since moved to IPS, so it was a bit difficult as we weren’t in the same areas. That didn’t put me off though, as Paul Caine, one of her colleagues used to regularly cover absence on my zone. He used to ask her lots of things for me and would then come back and tell me. Paul was very open, he told Kim that I was asking after her and eventually she agreed to go on date.”
Kim said: “I was really nervous on our first date. Dan took me to the Little Dessert Shop in Wolverhampton, he didn’t know at the time that I’m not a fan of puddings, so he ended up eating both mine and his own dessert. It didn’t put me off agreeing to a second date though. He’s a really good cook. He made spaghetti bolognese for us on our second date.
Dan proposed at Love Lock Bridge in Birmingham, getting down on one knee to pop the question. Kim said yes immediately.
Kim said: “The baby is our little miracle. I suffer from endometriosis and had been told I would struggle to conceive and may not be able to have children. We were on holiday and I felt really ill. I told Dan that I thought I was pregnant. When we got home I did a test and just couldn’t believe it. I rang my mum and asked her what the second blue line meant, she said “You’re pregnant, now get off the phone and go and tell Dan”. There was a lot of crying.
Dan said: “I have a little girl from a previous relationship and she’s really excited about becoming a big sister. Both our families are excited about the baby and the wedding. We’ve got a very busy few months ahead, but we can’t wait.”
