A super simple Kaizen in our Solihull Paint Shop is set to save over £50,000 per year thanks to smart thinking and drive to save much needed cash for our business. A huge well done to the team in our Paintshop spray booths.
You may not think it, but even the smallest of improvements can save thousands of pounds for our business. This is exactly what’s just happened in our Solihull Paint Shop.
Associate, Chris Seadon and Group Leader, Adam Surplice had a lightbulb moment recently whilst working on the contrast roof reinforcement spray pass process.
As each black contrast roof body passes throughout paint spray booths, an additional pass of black paint is applied to make sure any overcoat of main body colour hasn’t appeared on the contrast roof.
Chris and his eagle eye noticed they were still applying an additional pass even when the main body colour was black, as well as the roof. In true Refocus style, Chris saw the pound-saving signs and set about running a Kaizen with his Group Leader Adam.
With some quick JUKU maths, it was found that 35% of vehicles have a black contrast roof, and 66% of those vehicles have a black main body colour.
At our current build levels, this equates to over 45,000 vehicles a year savings a whopping £50,048 in cost savings, whether that be by using less paint, energy, or resource. Chris and Adam quickly amended their process to make sure they didn't have to re-spray black vehicles.
Chris commented, “Little savings really tot up at Solihull. I couldn’t believe how much we’ve saved by something so simple. We all need to take a step back and see if there’s anything we currently do, which really we don’t need to do.”
Chris and Adam, we salute you!
