An eagle-eyed Associate with a refocused quality mindset recently captured and helped contain a quality escape in Solihull's Final Assembly 1.
FA1 Associate and long-server, Gareth Jones, works on the brake pedal and securing process in Solihull's FA1 Zone 2.
Gareth fits over a hundred times brake switches each shift, so he was quick to notice when one shift, something wasn't quite right.
The brake pedal switch is in an integral part of the braking system on our Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports. The switch helps activate and deactivate cruise control, whilst also sending brake signals to rear taillights. Safe to say, it’s a critical piece of safety equipment.
Gareth explained, “I’ve been working on the brake pedal secure process for a while now and this certain shift, I noticed that the switch part wasn’t fitting in as it normally would.”
Thinking it might have been an issue with the part, Gareth tried another to see if that was the case. He continued, “After a couple of attempts it wasn’t just the one part, but a few others weren’t fitting in as they should.”
Gareth took action and raised his hand to alert his Group Leader, Matt Large, and Production Leader, Paul Brookes.
Paul Brookes is the Production Leader for Zone 2’s Red Shift and helped Gareth and Matt understand what wasn’t right and how they could contain the concern.
Paul explained, “Full credit to Gareth for raising his hand and to Matt for acting so quickly. We were able to alert the engineering team and with help from others we produced a jig fixture to ensure Gareth can continue fitting the parts correctly whilst we find a permanent fix.”
Ensuring we transform quality and over-satisfying our customers is vital for our business. Gareth explained, “Great quality will secure our future. If you see something wrong or not as it should be, pull the andon and let your Group Leader know."
