The new Range Rover Evoque remains as capable as any of its bigger siblings despite becoming more refined and luxurious since its inception in 2011.
Building on the strengths of the first generation car, the new Evoque combines all-terrain capability with on-road composure, a new vehicle architecture, uprated front and rear suspension and the latest in Adaptive Dynamics technology. All-in-all giving the compact Range Rover improved refinement, performance, safety and stability in all conditions.
The Evoque’s Chief Programme Engineer, Pete Simkin, said: “The new Evoque delivers the versatility and refinement required for modern city living, while still providing the all-terrain capability our customers expect from a Land Rover.
“We’ve engineered the new Evoque from the ground up, scrutinising every element to ensure we exceed the customers’ expectations.”
Powering the new Evoque is a mixture of petrol and diesel Ingenium engines, including a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid (due in 2019). Each has been fettled to make them quieter and more refined, while the nine-speed ZF automatic gearboxes have been recalibrated for a smoother, more progressive drive.
All of which is housed on Land Rover’s new mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture, which has been designed with hybrid-electric power in mind. The new body is therefore 13 percent stiffer than before, with the new rigidly mounted subframes helping reduce noise and vibration within the cabin.
Alongside the adaptive dynamics system, which uses sensors to monitor and adjust the dampers every 100 milliseconds, is the second generation Active Driveline. The lighter, more efficient electronic torque vectoring system constantly balances the power being sent to each axle.
Using a dog-leg clutch at the front axle and a twin-clutch rear drive unit means it can make faster transitions and disengage rear drive more often, increasing the flexibility and capability for a broader speed range of 2WD running. Also Terrain Response 2 will be fitted as standard on all automatic, all-wheel-drive Evoques.
