Sophie Huijie Ma has really embraced the RESET mentality since returning to the plant just six weeks ago.
Sophie works as an Engineering Project Engineer in BIW, and though she was excited to return to work she also knew that she had a juggling act on her hands when it came to work and sharing childcare duties with her husband.
Sophie wanted to be as efficient and focussed as possible when at work and she knew that she needed to find a creative resolution in juggling this with childcare and home-schooling. Sophie decided that the ‘early bird really does catch the worm’ and spoke to her manager about moving her shift start time to 4:15am. This would mean Sophie could then finish before 12:30pm each day and her husband could tag her into home-schooling duties and start his working day.
Sophie shared, “This is the only way I can juggle work and childcare at the moment. My role is very production related, so I need to be in the plant. Moving hours to this early pattern is challenging but it’s earned me quality hours to concentrate on work, I still join some meetings in the afternoon when needed from home.”
RESET is about positive behaviour the success of JLR is directly linked to all of us doing our best and being, as a team, the best we can be. The changes that Sophie has made are challenging for both her and her family but moving to these hours has given Sophie the flexibility to drive improvements and help her be as efficient as possible in her working day and also manage childcare and home-schooling whilst the children are at home.
Sophie knows that though these are challenging times and many of us are working in different ways, her advice to colleagues returning to plant is to, “have a positive mindset, be strong and vigilant. Focus on the quality of your work and try to increase your efficiency. We all want to have a better future, so let's all work together and contribute to it.”
