As we’ve continued to feel the impact of the global availability of semiconductors, reducing our Delivered Cost Per Car has been critical to our immediate and long-term future. Solihull's Paintshop team has taken the call the action and after a record-breaking year in 2020/2021, they’re set to smash their cost-saving records again thanks to some ingenious thinking.
Since April last year, our Paint team has delivered a whopping £28 Cost Per Unit reduction - which works out to over £5 million in savings.
And they’ve not stopped there. Naturally, needing to power huge ovens and spray booths, Solihull's Paintshop is the biggest consumer of energy on-site. As energy prices have soared over recent months, the team has looked at how they use equipment more efficiently. Added to this, developing new processes with SVO to support additional capacity for our bespoke colour range has resulted in combined benefits to the business worth of over £10 million!
John Sutherland, Solihull Paint Manufacturing Manager, commented, “Together, the Paintshop team have worked tirelessly to deliver Kaizens, drive out costs, minimise overtime and so much more. It’s been an incredibly challenging year and I want to thank everyone in Paint for their hard work and determination."
Having a Delivered Cost Per Car mindset has helped drive down costs in Paint. From Kaizens delivering reductions in the amount of paint used, through to new-and-improved power down checks. It has been a case of every penny counts.
Phil Bennett has been Paint's Cost-Saving Champion over the past two years. Phil explained, “The team spirit in paint has been fantastic. Everyone’s looked at their processes with fresh eyes around saving costs and been focused on making our future more sustainable. I want to say a big thank you to everyone."
On behalf of everyone at Solihull, a huge well-done, Paint. If you want to give your team a Solihull shout out, why not drop us an email to Solihull@jlr-colleaguecommunications.com with your story.
