Recently two of our colleagues visited All Saints Catholic High School (our partner school) for some speed dating!
Sara Hussein, Plant Engineer and Danielle Flynn, Higher Apprentice, visited the school to take part in the Drop Down Day programme for years 10 and 11.
The aim is for students to have contact with a wide variety of industries and careers in an hour. Every student saw 10 employers for around 6 minutes. The students can then use this for their career interviews and to visit companies/industries they have expressed an interest in.
Sara and Danielle spent time with the children, sharing their stories and experience from Jaguar Land Rover and found it a really rewarding experience.
Danielle said, “It was great to actually inform them about how broad the career is and to see a lot of interest in the apprenticeships we offer here. A lot of the students had their mind set on certain career paths but were then surprised to find out about different roles that are available here at JLR.”
Halewood Plant Engineer, Sara Hussein shared her thoughts on the day with us, “The event was well organised and structured, we had about five minutes with a group of six students, and rotated tables so every student had a chance to ask the various employees questions they had.
I shared my career path from school, college and university to my current role at JLR via the graduate scheme. I found that the students were very interested in how JLR Halewood operates as a plant, and were engaged during my description of the process from the Press Lines, to the Body Shop, Paint and into Trim & Final.
A large number of students said that university wasn’t for them, so I promoted the various apprenticeship programs which they were intrigued about. The experience gave me a chance to describe quite a busy job in simple and realistic terms to children who would otherwise find it daunting.
It was rewarding to see those who were interested in engineering, particularly the girls who had not considered it before, to see that engineering is such a broad discipline and JLR has opportunities and career paths for all kinds of people. The free pens were also a hit!”
